Some features require an iPhone XS or newer, here they are

iOS 16 will support iPhone 8, iPhone X and newer models. Even so, not all functions will be available for older iPhones. In this spirit, 9to5Mac has rounded up all the features that will require at least an iPhone XR and iPhone XS, when that next operating system becomes available to all users on Monday.

Some iOS 16 features will only be available for iPhones with the A12 Bionic chip or later, which are iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone 12, iPhone 12 ProiPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone SE (3rd generation).

Here are all the features that will only be available on a few iPhones with iOS 16 later this fall:

Live text in videos: Text is now fully interactive in paused video frames, so you can use features like copy-paste, search, and translate. This feature works in Photos, Quick Look, Safari, and other apps.

Quick Actions in Live Text: The data detected in photos and videos can be used with just one click. Track flights or shipments, translate foreign languages ​​and convert currencies.

New languages ​​for Live Text: With iOS 16, Live Text recognizes Japanese, Korean, and Ukrainian text.

Emoji in texts: Preview during the WWDC 2022 keynote, you can insert emoji when sending messages with Siri. It is available in Cantonese (Hong Kong), English (Australia, Canada, India, UK, US), French (France), German (Germany), Japanese (Japan), Mandarin Chinese (Mainland China, Taiwan) and Spanish (Mexico, Spain, United States).

Check out Siri features and apps: Open an app and ask, “Hey Siri, what can I do here?” or you can inquire about a specific app by saying, for example, “Hey Siri, what can I do with iRobot?” This feature is available in German (Germany), English (Australia, Canada, India, UK, US), Spanish (Mexico, Spain, US), French (France), Japanese (Japan), Mandarin Chinese (Mainland China) and Cantonese (Hong Kong).

All-new dictation experience: You can move seamlessly between voice and touch in iOS 16. Type with the keyboard, tap in the text field, move the cursor, and insert QuickType suggestions, all without having to stop dictating.

Add medication using your iPhone’s camera: You can quickly add medications using your iPhone XR/XS camera in iOS 16. Simply position the medication label in the frame and you’ll see results for the medication name, strength, and form.

Image search in more apps: With iOS 16, Spotlight uses image information in messages, notes, and files to allow searching by places, people, scenes, or even items within images, such as text, a dog, and more.

Visual search improvements: Lift the subject in one frame or isolate the subject by removing the background. It works in Photos, Screenshot, Quick View, Safari, etc.

New areas for Visual Look Up: Visual Loop Up adds bird, insect, and statue recognition.

Astronomy wallpaper: With iOS 16 beta 2, Apple has made available the Astronomy wallpapers for iPhone XR and iPhone XS users. Previously, it only worked with A13-enabled devices.

iOS 16 features for iPhone 11 and later

Live captions: Transcripts are automatically generated in real time for users who are deaf or hard of hearing so they can more easily follow conversations, audio, and video. Requires iPhone 11, iPad with A12 Bionic chip, or Mac with Apple Silicon. Only available in English (Canada, United States).

iOS 16 features exclusive to iPhone 13 models

The iPhone 13 models also have exclusive features with iOS 16. Here they are:

Foreground blur in portrait photos: Portrait mode lets you blur objects in the foreground of a photo for a more realistic depth-of-field effect.

Improved quality when recording in Cinematic mode: When recording videos in Cinematic mode on iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, the depth of field effect is more accurate for profile angles and around the edges of hair and glasses.

Features exclusive to iPhone 14 models

Cinematic mode in 4k: When recording Cinematic mode videos on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, users can choose between 1080p at 30 fps, 4k at 24 fps, or 4K at 30 fps.

Mode of action: The new iPhone 14 offers a new Action mode that reduces severe shaking, movement, and vibration, even when video is captured in the middle of the action.

While some features require a specific iPhone due to processor capabilities, Apple added a new battery icon with iOS 16 beta 5. Only a few devices will benefit from this new feature:

  • iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS and XS Max
  • iPhone X


These are all features exclusive to the newer iPhone models. As you can see, many of them work for iPhone XR and iPhone XS users, while only a few camera improvements are exclusive to iPhone 13 users.
