Salman Rushdie ‘does it well’, says ex-wife Padma Lakshmi

Salman Rushdie is able to speak and retains his ‘fiery and provocative’ sense of humor, his family said in a statement on Sunday – as his ex-wife Padma Lakshmi expressed relief that the author was ‘making it’ after being stabbed multiple times at a conference in upstate New York.

The famed writer’s son has confirmed reports that his father was off a ventilator after Friday’s attack and said that while he appeared to be in good spirits, he remained in critical condition with “changing injuries his life”.

“My father remains in critical condition in hospital and is receiving intensive medical care,” Zafar Rushdie wrote in a statement. “We are extremely relieved that yesterday he was taken off the ventilator and supplemental oxygen and was able to say a few words.”

“Although his life-changing injuries are severe, his usual fiery and provocative sense of humor remains intact,” he continued.

Lakshmi, who was married to the 74-year-old ‘Satanic Verses’ author from 2004 to 2007, said she was ‘relieved’ he was on the mend after Friday nightmare at Chautauqua.

“Relieved @SalmanRushdie is on the mend after Friday nightmare. Worried and mute, can finally breathe out. Now hoping for a speedy recovery,” Lakshmi, host of Bravo’s “Top Chef.” wrote on Twitter.

Rushdie’s son thanked conference audience members who “bravely jumped to his defenses” as well as the first responders and doctors who are now caring for him.

The author’s agent, Andrew Wylie, echoed that sentiment, telling The New York Times in a Sunday text“The road to recovery has begun.

“It’s going to be a long time; the injuries are serious, but his condition is going in the right direction,” he said.

Wylie, who previously said Rushdie is likely to lose an eye, did not return the Post’s request for comment on Sunday.

The author also suffered from a damaged liver and severed nerves in his arm, the agent said.

The alleged attacker Hadi Matar, 24, has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault for the public attack on a non-profit education and retirement center.

Prosecutors said Matar planned the stabbing, obtaining a conference pass from Rushdie with a fake ID.

Matar of Fairview, NJ, harbored sympathies for Iran, law enforcement sources says La Poste.

In 1989, Iran’s extremist leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or religious edict, calling for Anglo-Indian writerafter the publication of his novel “Les verses sataniques”. Khomeini died later that year, but Rushdie remained in hiding for roughly the next decade, until the Iranian government overturned the death sentence. Yet the fatwa was never rescinded.

Lakshmi and Rushdie started living together in 1999 and were married from 2004 to 2007.
