Paper Girls drops on Prime Video a day early

The entire first season of Prime Video’s adaptation of paper girls by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang is available to stream now, a day earlier than scheduled.

Written by Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Runaways) and illustrated by Chiang (human target), paper girls was published by Image Comics, for a total of 30 issues from October 2015 to July 2019. In July 2019, just before the comic was completed, Amazon Studios announced that it was developing a live-action adaptation of paper girls for Prime Video. The project was finally ordered in series one year later.

Paper Girls is Prime Video’s latest comic book adaptation

“The paper itineraries of four young friends are cut short on Hell Day 1988, when they unknowingly time travel to 2019,” Prime Video’s official synopsis paper girls bed. “As they search for a way home, they run into members of two warring time-jumping factions, and must come face to face with their adult selves and learn to work together to save the world.”

The live-action series stars Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng, and Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman. Additionally, Ali Wong stars as the adult version of Erin, while Nate Corddry stars as Larry. Vaughan and Chiang are both executive producers of the series.

“It’s so exciting” Vaughan said of adaptation while speaking with CBR at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. “It’s one thing to see moments from the comics that are perfectly translated, as we imagined, but it’s much more exciting to see moments that Cliff and I never imagined, or we didn’t have the real estate [for]… We only had 30 monthly comics to do [this].

“I think the excitement of seeing these four amazing performers… We just want to see them go to places we may not have been able to go in the comics,” he continued. “So it’s very cool to have a series that, if you liked it, captures the spirit [and] the tone perfectly, but it’s not the kind of thing that you can just go to Wikipedia and find out exactly what’s going to happen. There are still huge surprises, and it’s been great.”
