Apple is getting ready for its big launch event on September 7where we expect to see the company reveal a multitude of iPhone 14 models. But Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives touts this year’s product launch as a “pivotal” launch for the company, especially in light of upcoming changes in the iPhone 14 Pro.
iPhone launches are always big, but this year’s could be especially big, predicts Ives in an analyst note published by Ped30 (opens in a new tab). And that includes doubling down on one of the biggest rumors for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models – that they’ll get a $100 price hike this year.
“While the base iPhone remains at the same price, we believe a $100 price increase on the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max is likely in store given the component price increases as well as additional features. on this new release,” Ives wrote.
Apple’s focus could be on its Pro models, Ives added, as “Apple is expecting another big shift in the iPhone Pro and Pro Max mix.”
Others predicted an iPhone 14 Pro price hike, including Ives previously. A $100 price hike over what Apple currently charges for its Pro phones could see the iPhone 14 Pro go up to $1,099 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max to $1,199. The Galaxy S22 comes in at the same price of $1,199, which will make competition for the best phone all the closer.
iPhone 14 Pro: upgrades we’ve seen
Regarding the “additional functionality” that Ives refers to, it is possible that Apple will equip the iPhone 14 Pro with a starting storage of 256 GB, instead of 128 GB, to compensate for the expected price increase. While some analysts argue that storage increase will not happenadditional storage can help buyers ride out any price hikes.
As we’ve reported before, Apple could be bringing the biggest differences in years between the iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro is likely to get the new A16 Bionic Chipwhile rumors indicate that the base model of iPhone 14 could stay with the A15 chip.
The tech giant could also give the cameras of its Pro models a boost for the first time. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max could have a 48MP camera with support for 8K video recording. This will be a big deal for the Pro models which have generally stuck with a 12MP shooter and could solidify Apple’s place among the best camera phones available.
The most notable design change for the iPhone 14 Pro is the removal of the display notch. The Pro models could have a punch-hole camera and a pill-shaped cutout instead of a notch which could still make its presence known on the base iPhone 14 and the new rumor iPhone 14 Max models. Pros could also get a always-on display function. The iPhone 14 is already ready for a facelift thanks to iOS16 and the redesigned lock screen but pros could get “weather, calendars, stocks, activities, and other data” on the always-on display. In terms of new colors, there’s a new one dark purple variant that would arrive on the iPhone 14 Pro range.
Apple would have ordered 90 million iPhone 14 and remains optimistic about the demand for the new phones. Analyst Ives also backs the 90 million figure in his report.
The September 7 event could feature more than just the iPhone 14, though. Among the product rumors we might see next week is a new Apple Watch 8a possibility Apple Watch SE 2 and the Airpods Pro 2 wireless headphones.
