The Republican mayor of a chicago suburb The city is calling Windy City Mayor Lori Lightfoot after more than 60 migrants were shipped to her town and dropped off at a local hotel.
After being transported by bus from texas147 migrants arrived in Chicago on Wednesday, according to FOX 32. Sixty-four of those migrants were then taken to a Hampton Inn hotel in Burr Ridge, outside of Chicago, where they will stay for at least the next 27 days.
Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso, a Republican, told Fox News that the migrants were being used as “political pawns” by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
“From what I understand this hotel, about a year ago when refugees arrived from Afghanistan, apparently accepted several through faith-based or charitable organizations, but now the state guess he can just send migrants…it’s not about them, the migrants are fine, they’re being used as political pawns by the governor and the mayor,” Grasso said.
Grasso also said it was hypocritical for Lightfoot to complain about Texas Governor Greg Abbott sending migrants to Chicago and then turn around and “send [the migrants] to the suburbs.
“We are more than happy to see the people back to freedom, it is hypocrisy for the mayor of Chicago to complain about the governor of Texas – I agree with what he is doing – the city of Chicago says it’s going to be a sanctuary city which I oppose – but there must be vacant hotel rooms in Chicago There are hundreds of people in a city of millions Why are they sending them to the Republican suburbs? You have to wonder,” Grasso said.
He said that just because the Hampton Inn was being used to house refugees from Afghanistan ‘doesn’t give the governor or the mayor carte blanche to send a few busloads of migrants to our village without telling us’ .
“The border situation on the southern border is a totally different situation than the Afghan refugees. It’s total arrogance on the part of the state to assume that it can send migrants to the suburbs around Chicago,” said Grasso said.
A spokesperson for the Village of Burr Ridge told NBC5 that the migrants were originally at the Salvation Army’s Shield of Hope in Chicago and then transported to the Hampton Inn.
According to the report, a statement by the Illinois Department of Social Services reads that migrants “receive temporary shelter in urban and suburban hotels that have provided refuge to vulnerable families from Afghanistan and other parts of the world. We are grateful for the hospitality and care they received from individuals and organizations across Illinois.”
“We will continue to take action to ensure that everyone in Illinois has access to shelter, food, healthcare and other essential basic supports,” the statement said. “We anticipate that the State of Texas will continue to bus migrants into Illinois, and we remain committed to helping welcome newcomers in a responsible, orderly, and compassionate manner.”
Lightfoot repeatedly criticized Abbott and said he lacked “morals, humanity or shame”.
“Let me say loud and clear to Greg Abbott and his enablers in Texas with these continued political stunts, Governor Abbott confirmed what sadly many of us already knew, that he is a man without any morals, humanity or shame,” Lightfoot said at a conference. release on September 1.
