DALLAS – Police released surveillance video of the filming at Dallas Love Field airportshowing a chaotic and tense scene as a woman fired a gun, travelers took cover and an officer returned fire.
Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia showed the media the footage, which was edited by police and did not include audio.
The video showed a woman wearing a hoodie and mask walking towards an area near the South West ticket office.
Several dozen people stood in the area with their suitcases at the counters. The area is adjacent to the Love Field security checkpoint.
The video featured the suspect – identified by police as Portia Odufuwa – and a Dallas police officer.
The suspect then raised a gun in the air and fired three shots in the air, according to Garcia. Travelers in the area scattered and took cover; the officer took up position behind a ticket kiosk.
The suspect then pointed at the officer; police said in an affidavit that they fired at the officer, according to bullet evidence collected at the scene.
The officer returned fire and the suspect fell and began to crawl before stopping.
The suspect was shot in an area between two counters; a Southwest employee to the left of the suspect can be seen running away behind the counter.
At least one traveler could be seen huddled behind a gazebo between the officer and the suspect.
The suspect seemed to keep moving her legs on the ground, but she remained in the same area. Other travelers in the area continued to retreat and attempt to take cover.
A second officer then approached where the first officer was standing, both pointing their guns at the suspect. Other officers arrived at the scene.
The suspect was then taken into custody and taken to hospital for treatment.
Approximately 14 seconds passed between the moment the suspect raised her arm in the air and the moment the officer returned fire and put her down, shooting her in the lower body.
No other injuries were reported in the incident, which unfolded around 11 a.m. Monday.
An affidavit released on Tuesday shed light on the incident, saying Odufuwa threatened to blow up the airport before firing two shots into the ceiling. Police also later found a bullet “with a trajectory located in the gazebo near where” the officer was hiding, “confirming that it fired at the officer during the encounter,” the affidavit states.
Shortly after the woman fired her gun, the officer, who was not injured, returned several shots, knocking the woman to the ground as she was shot in the lower body .
It was initially unclear where the woman was aiming with her shots, or what her motive might have been, Garcia said Monday, noting that the woman’s shots did not hit anyone else in the airport.
The shooting forced airport security officials to evacuate the entire airport and re-screen everyone. The incident caused hundreds of delays to South West flights, affecting more than 30,000 passengers, as Love Field operations were halted for hours.
Dallas police asked the public on Tuesday if anyone else might have video of the shooting on their cellphone. The police gave a link to where people can upload their videos here.
